What is Point to Point networking?
Point to Point technologies are simply a way to enable business enterprise customers, ISPs, and multi-building campuses
to tap into large amounts of bandwidth for broadband speeds. Traditionally a mid to large business with multiple buildings
in a campus type environment had two routes to provide broadband (high speeds) access to all users.
- Contact the local phone company and have a dedicated circuit installed in each building. This method is very costly
and it takes an inordinate amount of time for the local carrier to install. An example would be for a mid sized company
with three buildings in a small campus to have the local exchange carrier install a T-1 (1.544 Mbps thoughput) in each of
the buildings. The monthly bill for those circuits would be in the neighborhood of $2500.00 a month.
-
Trench between the buildings with fiber optic lines which is very costly to install and requires considerable
coordination with local government entities for permitting, etc.
So what's the answer? Point to Point Bridging! In the example above for three buildings in
a campus, you install a circuit into only one of the buildings and microwave the data from the other two buildings (rooftop
to rooftop) to the one with the circuit. It is that simple!
What is the Return on Investment? The following are some of the factors which give an idea of ROI.
-
Capital Costs for equipment only. No reoccuring expenses.
-
Very high throughput
-
Deployment can be measured in days instead of months
-
Voice, Data, Video are all fully useable
-
Can extend your Local Area Network out to 50 miles without added circuits
-
No Right of Way or other permitting requirements
-
Ease of maintenance and reliability
It makes a lot of fiscal sense to explore fixed wireless possiblities. Give us a call at SpeedLIN and
